RUNNER’S KNEE (PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN)
- Dull, aching pain around the front of the knee and kneecap (patella)
- Pain that worsens with activities like running, squatting, climbing stairs, or sitting for long periods
- Grinding sensation in the knee
How it Happens
Whilst the actual cause of patellofemoral pain is unknown, it is believed to be due to one or a combination of the following:
- Overuse or repetitive stress on the knee joint
- Improper alignment of the patella during movement
- Muscle imbalances in the hip and thigh muscles
- Increased stress on the knee joint due to running technique
SHIN SPLINTS (MEDIAL TIBIAL STRESS SYNDROME)
ACHILLLES TENDINOPATHY
- Pain and stiffness along the Achilles tendon, especially near the heel
- Pain that is worse after periods of rest (this pain that may improve once warmed up)
- Thickening and tenderness along the tendon
How it Happens
- Overuse without adequate recovery
- Sudden increase in intensity or frequency of physical activity
- Poor footwear or improper training techniques
PLANTAR FASCIITIS
- Sharp pain in the heel or along the foot’s arch
- Pain that’s worse in the morning or after periods of inactivity ( this pain that may improve once warmed up)
- Tenderness in the heel and tightness in the foot
How it Happens
- Overuse or repetitive stress on the plantar fascia
- Sudden increase in activity level or intensity
- Foot/ankle muscle weakness or immobility
- Inadequate footwear
ILIOTIBIAL BAND (ITB) SYNDROME
- Pain on the outer side of the knee that can extend to the thigh
- Pain worsens with activities like running, especially downhill
- Tenderness or burning sensation along the IT band
How it Happens
- Repetitive friction of the IT band against the outer knee
- Weakness in the hip and glute muscles
- Running on uneven surfaces
What to expect from your treatment at DG Health
DISCUSSION: Your practitioner will listen to your issues and you’ll set some running-related goals together.
ASSESSMENT: Next, you’ll be guided through a range of tests that will help determine the cause of your issue. This may include a gait and running assessment.
DIAGNOSIS: Your practitioner will give you a clear diagnosis and ensure that you have a full understanding of what caused it.
TREATMENT: A combination of hands on treatment and exercise prescription will be used to help alleviate your pain.
MANAGEMENT PLAN: Your practitioner will provide you with a copy of your management plan so you have a clear road to recovery. This may include a running program appropriate to your condition.
